Livestock Produce 51 Percent of Greenhouse Gases

Hutan Gundul

World Watch Institute, in a report that was pioneered Edition Watch Magazine November / December 2009 mentions that livestock are responsible for causing at least 51 percent of global greenhouse gases. This is no longer yellow lights, but had a red light.

World Watch Institute is an independent research organization in Washington the United States that stood since 1974. This organization is known critical global issues and the environment. Writer's Dr. Robert Goodland, former environmental adviser to the field for the World Bank and World Bank research staff Jeff Anhang. Both this report based Long Shadow Ranch, a report published in 2006 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Magazine was published in 36 languages and research data used by many NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) around the world, and agencies under the United Nations. NGOs are using the data include Greenpeace Southeast Asia, and Yayasan Obor Indonesia.

The two researchers also calculated emissions of the life cycle of farmed fish production, CO2 from breathing animal, and correction of the actual calculation of the number of reported cattle on earth. Methane gas released by cattle heat binds 72 times more powerful than CO2. This represents an increase that is more accurate than the original calculation of the FAO with warming potential of 23 times. However, researchers were told that their estimates about 51 percent were still minimal numbers.

"The people of Indonesia, even the parties should pay attention to environmental issues, must know information about the impact of livestock industry and the dangers of meat. What are the Indonesian government to do right now? The data is spread out. The government, if it still does not believe about the dangers of meat, please go to the Internet and find out, "said environmentalists are also professors of architecture Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University, Agustinus Madyana Putra.

Cows Used for Their Milk

cows6

Cow2Cow3

The 9 million cows living on dairy farms in the United States spend most of their lives in large sheds or on feces-caked mud lots, where disease is rampant.3 Cows raised for their milk are repeatedly impregnated. Their babies are taken away so that humans can drink the milk intended for the calves. When their exhausted bodies can no longer provide enough milk, they are sent to slaughter and ground up for hamburgers.

Cows produce milk for the same reason that humans do: to nourish their babies. In order to force the animals to continue giving milk, factory farmers impregnate them using artificial insemination every year. Calves are generally taken from their mothers within a day of being born—males are destined for veal crates, and females are sentenced to the same fate as their mothers.

cows11

Mother cows on dairy farms can often be seen searching and calling for their calves long after they have been separated. Author Oliver Sacks, M.D., wrote of a visit that he and cattle expert Dr. Temple Grandin made to a dairy farm and of the great tumult of bellowing that they heard when they arrived: “‘They must have separated the calves from the cows this morning,’ Temple said, and, indeed, this was what had happened. We saw one cow outside the stockade, roaming, looking for her calf, and bellowing. ‘That’s not a happy cow,’ Temple said. ‘That’s one sad, unhappy, upset cow. She wants her baby. Bellowing for it, hunting for it. She’ll forget for a while, then start again. It’s like grieving, mourning—not much written about it. People don’t like to allow them thoughts or feelings.’”4

After their calves are taken from them, mother cows are hooked up, several times a day, to machines that take the milk intended for their babies. Using genetic manipulation, powerful hormones, and intensive milking, factory farmers force cows to produce about 10 times as much milk as they naturally would.5 Animals are pumped full of bovine growth hormone (BGH), which contributes to painful inflammation of the udder known as “mastitis.” (BGH is used throughout the U.S., but has been banned in Europe and Canada because of concerns over human health and animal welfare.)6 According to the industry’s own figures, between 30 and 50 percent of dairy cows suffer from mastitis, an extremely painful condition.7

A cow’s natural lifespan is 25 years, but cows used by the dairy industry are killed after only four or five years.8 An industry study reports that by the time they are killed, nearly 40 percent of dairy cows are lame because of the filth, intensive confinement, and the strain of constantly being pregnant and giving milk.9 Dairy cows are turned into soup, companion animal food, or low-grade hamburger meat because their bodies are too “spent” to be used for anything else.

Veal Calves

Male calves—“byproducts” of the dairy industry—are generally taken from their mothers when they are less than 1 day old.10 The calves are then put into dark, tiny crates, where they are kept almost completely immobilized so that their flesh stays tender. The calves are fed a liquid diet that is low in iron and has little nutritive value in order to make their flesh white. This heinous treatment makes the calves ill, and they frequently suffer from anemia, diarrhea, and pneumonia. Frightened, sick, and alone, these calves are killed after only a few months of life. “Veal” is the flesh of a tortured, sick baby cow, and a byproduct of the milk industry.

All adult and baby cows, whether raised for their flesh or their milk, are eventually shipped to a slaughterhouse and killed.

Vegan Diet

Vegan diets are vegetarian diets  including not eating eggs also avoid milk. A person on a vegan diet does not use any item produced out of the parts of animals like furs, leather etc. A vegan diet has a lot of variety. It includes the intake of lots of fruits and vegetables, especially green vegetables, nuts, whole grains, seeds and legumes.

Vegan diets are very good sources of proteins, as they have a variety of food types that can be eaten. Protein levels can be maintained with the intake of good, balanced calorie levels. A vegan diet also assists you in keeping fat levels in total control. Vegan food is basically cholesterol and fat free. This helps to resist disease and keeps you away from chronic ailments like heart attacks and cancer. Such diets are store wells of calcium and zinc that are found in green vegetables and legumes.

Vegan diets are preferred around the world. Some of the many reasons include the health benefits, animal right’s issues and it is universally available in large quantities and varieties.

A vegan diet is especially recommended for infants and children. It works as an excellent diet from birth through adolescent. This diet also builds the immunity system of children and adds to their psychological well being. It is also noticed that the growth of children is more gradual in those who follow a vegan diet.

An individual can avail of a vegan diet online or can consult a dietician or health advisor.

A Sad Animal Story

I don’t remember much from the place I was born. It was cramped and dark, and we were never played with by the humans. I remember Mom and her soft fur, but she was often sick, and very thin. She had hardly any milk for me and my brothers and sisters. I remember many of them dying, and I missed them so much.

I don’t remember the day I was taken from Mom. I was so sad and scared, my milk teeth had only just come in, and I really should have been with Mom still, but she was so sick and the Humans kept saying that they wanted money and were tired of the "mess" that me and my sister made.

So we were crated up and taken to a strange place. Just the two of us. We huddled together and were scared, still no humans hands came to pet us or to love us. So many sights and sounds, and smells! We are in a store where there are many different animals! Some that squawk! Some that meow! Some that peep! My sister and I are jammed into a small cage. I can hear other puppies here. I see humans look at me. I like the little humans – the kids – best. They look so sweet, and fun, like they would play with me!

EUTHANASIA is a procedure performed by a vet in which the animal is painlessly killed by a lethal injection. For our pets that are in pain or terminally ill or just old, this can be the last humane thing we can do for them

All day we stay in a small cage, sometimes mean people will hit the glass to frighten us, every once in a while we are taken out to be held or shown to humans. Some are gentle, some hurt us. We always hear "Aw, they’re so cute! I want one!" But we never get to go with any one. My sister died last night, when the store was dark. I lay my head on her soft fur and felt the life leave her small thin body. I had heard them say she was sick, and that I should be sold at a "discount price" so I would quickly leave the store. I think my soft whine was the only one that mourned for her, as her body was taken out of the cage in the morning and dumped.

Today, a family came and bought me. Oh, happy day! They are a nice family, they really, really wanted me! They bought a dish and food and the little girl held me so tenderly in her arms. I love her so much! The mom and dad say what a sweet and good puppy I am. I’m named Angel. I love to lick my new humans. The family takes such good care of me, they are loving and tender and sweet. They gently teach me right and wrong, give me lots of good food, and lots of love. I want only to please these wonderful people! I love the little girl and I enjoy running and playing with her.

Today, I went to the veterinarian, it was a strange place and I was frightened. I got some shots, but my best friend the little girl held me softly and said it would be OK. So, I relaxed. The vet must have said sad words to my beloved family, because they looked awfully sad. I heard "severe hip dysplasia", and something about my heart……I heard the vet say something about backyard breeders and my parents not being tested. I know not what any of that means, just that it hurts me to see my family so sad, but they still love me, and I still love them very much.

I am 6 months old now. Where most other puppies are robust and rowdy, it hurts me terribly to move. The pain never lets up. It hurts to run and play with my beloved little girl, and I find it hard to breathe. I keep trying my best to be the strong pup I know I am supposed to be, but it is so hard. It breaks my heart to see the little girl so sad, and to hear the Mom and Dad talk about "Now might be the time". Several times I have gone to that vet’s place, and the news is never good. Always talk about congenital problems. I just want to feel the warm sunshine and run, and play, and nuzzle my family. Last night was the worst, the pain had been constant. Now it even hurts to get up and have a drink. I try to get up but can only whine in pain.

I am taken in the car one last time. Everyone is so sad, and I don’t know why. Have I been bad? I try to be a good and loving dog – what have I done wrong? Oh, if only this pain would go! If only I could soothe the tears of my little girl. I reach out my muzzle to lick her hand, but I can only whine in pain. The vet’s table is so cold. I am so frightened. The humans all hug and love me, and they cry into my soft fur. I can feel their love and sadness. I manage to softly lick their hands. Even the vet isn't so scary today. He is gentle and I sense some kind of relief for my pain.

The little girl holds me gently and I thank her for giving me all her love. I feel a pinch in my foreleg. The pain is beginning to lift, and a peace descends upon me. I can now softly lick her hand. My vision is becoming dreamlike now, and I can see my mother and my brothers and sisters in a far off green place. They tell me there is no pain there, only peace and happiness. I tell the family goodbye in the only way I know how – a soft wag of my tail and a nuzzle from my nose. I had hoped to spend many many moons with them but it just wasn’t meant to be.

"You see" said the vet, "pet shop puppies do not come from ethical breeders!" The pain ends now, and I know it will be many years before I see my beloved family again. If only things could have been different.

Should Children Eat Vegan?

With so many people around the world adopting a Vegan lifestyle, it is no wonder that a lot of parents are starting to ensure that their children are raised to eat a Vegan diet as well.  If you find yourself trying to determine whether a Vegan lifestyle is suitable for your children you are certainly not alone.  Each year there are thousands of people who switch to Vegan diets and children are included in this frequently.  I you are completely confused it is best to talk to your doctor but in general most children do quite well with a Vegan diet as long as a few precautions are considered.

Your first step should be taking a good look at all of your nutritional knowledge.  If you have a poor knowledge of nutrition then it will be extremely difficult for you to determine if you are capable to meet your child’s nutritional needs.  While most parents worry about giving their children adequate nutrition if you feed your child a Vegan diet, it is even more important because many nutrients can be easily overlooked if you are not meticulous in your nutritional pursuit.

If you are not certain exactly what your child needs nutritionally it is time to enroll in either a nutritional class or start looking online for some clear information on exactly what you need to focus on for your children.  A proper emphasis on nutrition will allow your children to eat a Vegan diet while still getting all of the nutrients that are needed.  It is extremely important to watch nutritional intake closely, many beginner Vegans do tend to overlook and skip over essential nutrients that are critical to basic nutrition.  If you are determined to live a Vegan lifestyle then frequently a vitamin supplement is extremely helpful.

It is extremely important to ensure that you are encouraging children to eat plenty of delicious foods.  Many children tend to shy away from eating ample fruits and vegetables in normal life, however if you are encouraging a healthy lifestyle of Vegan eating you will need to ensure that children are consuming enough fruits and vegetables to give them ample nutrients.  This is not always easy to do, particularly if your children are in the habit of consuming meats.  However, if you start your children with a Vegan lifestyle in the beginning as your baby is first starting to eat solid foods you will find that it is much easier to do.

Many parents discover that children trying to give up meat is much harder to do and complete than anything else that they have ever tried to do.  This is a sad reality but many children do not handle change well.  Even something as small as what they are used to eating can create a huge chaotic problem, in order to assure that you are getting the best results possible you should work to enlist the help of your children rather than trying to force them to eat a diet that they are not fond of.  Small things such as a positive attitude can have a huge impact when it comes time to actually ensure that you are giving your children the benefits that they really need.

A proper venture into a Vegan diet can allow your children to eat exactly as you are eating without any major problems and complications.  However, it is also important to realize that you are providing your children with ample nutritional supplements to fully protect them from nutritional deficiencies.  Small problems in nutritional habits can become huge complications if you are attempting a Vegan lifestyle without properly paying attention to the special needs that you are likely to have.  A well-planned lifestyle can effectively allow you to incorporate a Vegan lifestyle for even children while still staying healthy.  There is no reason why you should feel as if you must feed your children meats in order for them to be healthy, a bit of time and effort can resolve all deficiencies.

Global Warming and Our Children

If you surf the internet, listen to the radio, or watch the news on television, there is a good chance that you have heard of global warming before.  Although you may have heard of global warming before, have you taken the time to better understand?  If you are a parent, you should.

One of the many reasons why individuals feel that global warming is not a serious issue is because of all of the debate that surrounds it.  Yes, global warming does have its opponents and some of that opposition do have valid points, but is global warming something that you are willing to ignore?  If you are a parent, it shouldn’t be.

As stated multiple times above, if you are a parent, global warming should be a huge concern of yours.  After all, you love your children don’t you?  When your children grow up, you likely want them to have their own family and children, right?  After all, many individuals want their family name and legacy to be carried on for eternity.  Unfortunately, global warming may throw a wrench in that plan.

As it was previously stated, global warming is an issue that many are unsure about.  In addition to wondering if those who oppose global warming are right, the delayed affects of global warming also play a role.  Yes, we are starting to see many changes resulting from global warming, such as melting glaciers and droughts, but these changes are small compared to what is being predicted.  Unfortunately, many individuals go by the thinking of “it isn’t a problem if we can’t see it.”  Although you may not be able to live to see the drastic and horrific affects of global warming, your children or their children may.

Speaking of the horrific affects of global warming, you may wonder just what is expected to happen.  As previously stated, glaciers and other ice masses are melting.  Despite the fact that this melting has always been noticed, it has picked up in speed.  If things continue, coastal flooding is predicted and not just in limited areas, but around the entire world.  Do you and your family currently reside in a coastal area?  If so, did you know that global warming may prevent your children or their children from doing the same? Your hometown and your history will be unable to be shared with future family members to come, as it may be under water.

Coastal flooding is just one of the many ways that global warming may have a profound affect on your children or their children.  Other affects of global warming are likely to include increased temperatures, droughts, and weather instability.  These global warming affects can have a huge impact on your future family’s ability to eat, drink, work, and live.  That is why you are urged to take action.  After all, you do love your family right?

If you would like to help join in the fight against global warming, you will want to get started soon. The sooner we all take action, the easier it will be to make a successful, united stance against global warming.  To get you started, you may want to look at your home and your vehicle.  If you are unable to purchase an energy efficient vehicle, carpool or use public transportation as much as possible, as well as combine as many errands together in one trip as possible.  As for your home, limit your electricity uses by only running your dishwasher when it is full, use energy efficient light bulbs, and turn your heat down, even just a few degrees.

Red Bean Ice Cream

titlee_r_bean_i_cream

clip_image001Ingredientsclip_image001[1]

clip_image002350ml non-dairy whipping cream
clip_image002[1]200ml milk
clip_image002[2]200g (7 oz) red beans, boiled until very soft
clip_image002[3]70g (2.5 oz) light brown sugar (to taste)

clip_image003

clip_image001[2]Directionsclip_image001[3]

(1) Beat non-diary whipping cream at high speed with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add all other ingredients and blend at high speed with electric mixer for 2-3 minutes. Place the mixture in a freezer.

(2) After two hours, remove mixture from freezer and blend 1-2 minutes with electric mixer a second time. Then place it in freezer again.

(3) After another two hours, remove from freezer, blend for a third time for about 1-2 minutes, and return to the freezer to freeze completely. The ice cream is ready to serve when frozen. Repeating the “freeze-blend-freeze” process three times will make the texture of the ice cream soft and fine. clip_image003[1]  *Dairy whipping cream is condensed from fresh milk. It has lesser whip-ability than non-dairy whipping cream. To make ice cream, one should use non-dairy whipping cream.
* Non-diary whipping cream and liquid are the main ingredients of ice cream. If you use the proper proportions, you can make various flavors of ice creams. Generally speaking, the best proportion to give a smooth taste is 5:3: for example, 200ml non-diary whipping cream to 120ml liquid. Adding some fruit pulp and/or nuts will enhance the flavor.

Looking for a Solution to Cows' Climate Problem

Looking for a Solution to Cows' Climate Problem

With the approach of the U.N. Climate Conference in Copenhagen next month, the livestock industry is coming under renewed scrutiny for its contribution to greenhouse gases.

But a more recent report for the World Watch Institute, by Robert Goodland, former environmental adviser to the World Bank, and Jeff Anhang, environmental specialist at the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corp., estimates this figure to be much higher: 51 percent, when the entire life cycle and supply chain of the livestock industry is taken into consideration.

Their report — “Livestock and Climate Change: What if the key actors in climate change are ... cows, pigs and chickens?” — factors in emissions from the tens of billions of animals exhaling CO2 annually, as well as deforestation for feed production and grazing, which prevents the reduction in greenhouse gases that would normally result from photosynthesis.

As things stand, global meat and dairy consumption is projected by the F.A.O. to more than double by 2050. Reversing the role of livestock in climate change is “even more important than the urgent transition to renewable energy,” Dr. Goodland wrote in an e-mail message.

In the World Watch report released last month, Dr. Goodland and Mr. Anhang wrote that “livestock (like automobiles) are a human invention and convenience, not part of pre-human times, and a molecule of CO2 exhaled by livestock is no more natural than one from an auto tailpipe.”
Their solution to livestock’s global warming effect is simple: eat less animal products, or better still, none at all.

The researchers propose revenue-neutral carbon taxes on products that are greenhouse gas intensive, so that foods like pork and beef would pay for their high environmental cost.

But their wider proposal, however, is to find “better alternatives to livestock products,” like foods made with soy, seitan and mycoprotein, the ingredient in Quorn products made by the British company Marlow Foods.

“Meat and dairy analog companies have been working on continuous improvement of their products, and further improvement can be expected,” Dr. Goodland said. “This contrasts with meat and dairy companies, which sell products whose quality is practically impossible to improve, and which many believe has deteriorated in recent years with decreased regulation and increases in zoonotic diseases.”

Another meat substitute under development is cultured meat — meat produced in vitro, from a cell culture, rather than in vivo, from an animal.
“We think that within 10 years, a cultured meat product should be feasible,” Jason Matheny, director of New Harvest, a nonprofit research organization working to develop meat substitutes, wrote in an e-mail message this month.
Cultured meat would also have a significantly reduced environmental impact, according to Mr. Matheny. “Recent research at Oxford University suggests that cultured meat would reduce meat’s greenhouse gas emissions by around 90 percent. It would do more for the climate than would replacing all of our cars with bicycles.”

Mr. Matheny believes that the stigma surrounding cultured meat will change, “in part because of food-borne illnesses from regular meat, like avian and swine flu, that originated in factory farms.”

“What we’re talking about is hydroponic meat that would be the cleanest meat ever produced,” said Mr. Matheny. “That’s far preferable to how our meat is produced now: 10,000 animals crammed into a metal shed, pumped full of drugs and living in their own waste.”

Instead of looking to science and the future for a solution to the world’s livestock woes, many others are looking back at an old-world approach to agriculture in the form of small-scale, sustainable family farms.
